Teacher Excellence Award Winners

Gina Goldberg, May 2018 Teacher Excellence Award Winner

Congratulations to Gina Goldberg!

Gina Goldberg received the May 2018 Teacher Excellence Award during Teacher Appreciation Week. Currently in her seventh year as a PE teacher at Holaway Elementary, Ms. Goldberg began her career 13 years ago as an adaptive PE teacher, traveling to different schools within Amphitheater Public Schools.

In addition to teaching PE to all students at Holaway, Ms. Goldberg has developed extracurricular activities for her students, including Mighty Milers (a running club for students during lunch and recess), Amphi’s only cross country program for elementary school students that competes against Tucson Unified School District schools, and a track and field program.

In addition, Ms. Goldberg started a shoe closet, providing needed running equipment for students and their families that could not afford it on their own.

Through these programs, Ms. Goldberg’s students develop a love for running. They also provide students the opportunity to meet other kids across the region, and it helps them focus in their other classes.

Ms. Goldberg was nominated by Kim Moran, a colleague and former Teacher Excellence Award winner. Ms. Moran said, “Gina Goldberg is not your average P.E. teacher. She instills a deep love of health into children that do not always have the means to do so. Students have run millions of miles since she brought the Mighty Milers program to Holaway. Cross country is another incredible program that coach Gina has brought for any of our students to take part in. She advocates, plans, organizes events throughout the year that enrich and unite our school!”

Ms. Moran went on to say, “Her dedication to all students became quite evident when she brought a new program for my special education students in order to support their physical needs and development! As a parent of Holaway, I cannot begin to express how remarkable it is that my child has been able to have a model that fosters a love of movement and inner strength. As a colleague, I am proud to work alongside Gina Goldberg.”

As part of the Teacher Excellence Award, Ms. Goldberg received flowers and a plaque from TVT, a $100 gift card from Office Depot/OfficeMax, a mini bell donated by Ben’s Bells, and pizza for her class from Humble Pie! She also received $250 cash courtesy of Tucson Electric Power and Helios Education Foundation.
