Many Arizona teachers don’t feel valued, respected or trusted enough by the general public, all likely reasons contributing to Arizona’s teacher shortage, according to a 2013 statewide study released by Tucson Values Teachers, sponsored by the University of Arizona College of Education and the Southern Arizona Leadership Council. The lack of professional public value is compounded by the reality that Arizona has some of the lowest teacher salaries in the United States.

Tucson Values Teachers (TVT) is a partnership of business leaders, educators and individuals with a shared mission to inspire support of PreK-12 teachers in Southern Arizona through community collaborations that attract, retain, and celebrate teacher excellence. We recognize the critical role teachers play in student achievement and the vital influence they have on the future of Tucson and our region. Through our work, we seek to raise public awareness of the value of the teaching profession and provide a range of programs to support teachers professionally and financially. We also leverage our partnerships with the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and other business and education groups to advocate for funding and policies that positively impact teachers, students and schools.

Tucson Values Teachers is an innovative approach to educational reform that grows out of strong partnerships among businesses, educators and the community. TVT has met early success with programs for teachers, including well-paid summer internships and a range of discounts and incentives that are built on business/education partnerships.

Driven organizationally by the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, Tucson Values Teachers has quickly gained broad community support. Business, educational and nonprofit organizations recognize not only the importance of quality teachers, but also the importance of the Tucson Values Teachers idea to the region’s future.
